History, Humanity and the Heart

Sunday Sept. 27, 2020 | Genesis 6:5-13 KJV

But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Matthew 24:36-39

We look at man, Noah. Around him, humanity had turned wickedness. Noah and his family believed and obeyed. They walked with God.

History, Humanity and the Heart

Sunday Sept. 20, 2020 | Sound Doctrine

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Genesis 6:5-13 KJV

Let's look at Humanity from a "three-D" perspective: Depravity, damage, and destruction.

Moral corruption was so pervasive that only Noah walked with God. The rest of the world distanced itself from God because of man's depravity, his sinfulness, disobedience, and moral decay.

Depravity leads to damage. By rejecting our loving God with disdain and contempt, man was causing irreparable harm to himself.

This depravity and the damage that resulted, led to destruction. This is the destruction God speaks of to Noah. This is what humanity committed itself to, without so much as a blush for sin, for depravity, for damage.

It's not just in this sixth chapter of Genesis. Today, if you're putting your hope in humanity, you're lost. And you're depending on someone who is more lost to take you to a place that's found.

Only Jesus Christ is the answer. That's the love of God demonstrated in the Son of God, the only hope for all of humanity.

History, Humanity and the Heart

September 13, 2020 | Genesis 6:5-13

This is God's testimony, God's account of Noah. In the midst of a violent, corrupt wicked world, Noah stands just and lawful, desiring only God.

As a part of man's history, this narrative tells us God knows Noah to be just, a man of truth and faith, worthy of His grace.

But the rest of the world fell to evil and sin. God knows the end of man will come; He's already drawn this conclusion. All flesh is corrupt apart from God. Always, man has violence, hatred and oppression in his blood, in his heart, without the grace of God.

History. Humanity. Heart. We'll continue this sermon series next week, looking at humanity in the context of this Scripture.

History, Humanity and the Heart

September 6, 2020 | Genesis 6:5-13 KJV

God gives us this account, His observations; the wickedness of man, of humanity, is great on this earth. Man's determined to sin, living in a world full of violence, evil and corruption.

Based on what He sees, God's response is to destroy both man and beast.

But God saw goodness in Noah. God's grace found Noah in the midst of the violence and hatred.

Has God's grace found you?

A ONE-MAN MOVEMENT: PAUL

Acts 17:16-32 KJV | August 30, 2020

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

Acts 17:28-32 KJV

Athens reeked of religious chaos; the city was totally committed to image worship: false gods, superstition, idolatry.

In the midst of this chaos we have a one-man movement; it's the disciple Paul vs. the philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks.

Awaiting the arrival of Timothy and Silas, Paul is alone. He is outnumbered, outmanned; how can he survive when everything around him is so utterly contrary to God?

He preached to them. Jesus and the resurrection. What we have through Him, because of Him. The redemption, The Name of Jesus, the glad tidings of a living God who sent His Son to suffer for the sins of the world, and then raised Him up on the third day.

Paul is the victor, because of the power of the name of Jesus, and the promise of Jesus to be with him as he carries His Name.

Paul is turning the world upside down.

CONTRADICTING GOD, Part 7

Acts 17:23-32 | August 23, 2020

I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.  The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;  nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;  and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth,

- Acts 17:23-26

Is your worship tied to God? Are you worshipping God in a manner acceptable to Him? Are we meeting God's standard for worship?

Or is your worship a contradiction?

Before you come face-to-face with God, you may not have problems moving your lips, running your mouth with words of the worldly.

The world tells us that man is the master of his own faith, the captain of his own soul. Many, including Christians, believe we should do the best we can to make the world a better place.

So even professed Christians contradict God. Those who believe in evolution have turned aside the Bible's account of creation. So have those who agree with abortion, racism and so many other practices displeasing to God and against His Word.

But when you come face-to-face, you won't be able to stand in the magnitude of His Glory. When you come face-to-face, you've got to bow down. And as He asked in Job 38, "...where were you?..."

Can you say that all that you are, you owe to God?

CONTRADICTING GOD, Part 6

Acts 17:22-23 | August 16, 2020

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐬' 𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝, 𝐘𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬, 𝐈 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐲𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬. What is worship? Are we confining worship to a set of rituals on an appointed day and time, week after week, with the focus on habit rather than on the delight of a Living God?

Are we that much different than those who don't know God, such as the Athenians of Paul's time, who built altars and created rituals to appease an unknown deity?

This contradicts God.

Worship is the adoration; bowing down and submitting wholly to Him as His servants. It is not just a time, place and set of procedures on Sunday mornings; it is a full-time job ALL should be doing in service of our Living God.

Those who truly seek, worship, serve and trust God and commit to His Word, receive fulfillment in His blessings, power and salvation.

Our religion, what we believe, is revealed and expressed in our devotion, our worship. Religion and worship go hand-in-hand.

In these verses of scripture, we deal an extreme approach religion: covering all bases with an altar to an unknown god. Both then and now, it's chaotic: instead of focusing on the one true, living God, the focus is on covering every aspect of religion, satisfying every belief system, which is then expressed in worship.

We seem to be taking this approach today, in pursuit of truths that are not of God, in harmony with everyone but God. We are not called to a catch-all religion, but to worship the true and only God. Otherwise, we're contradicting God.

Who is higher than God Himself?

CONTRADICTING GOD, Part 4

Acts 17:22-32 | August 2, 2020

Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation. Acts 17:22-26

The world looks at religion as an opportunity to make man better by man-made means. And the church looks at religion as the basis by which we live for God, we seek the promise, the reward of our faith.

But why does the world, and the church, seem to be contradicting God in so many ways? We may expect that of the world, but when it comes to the church, why is It that how we live and what we do is so contrary to what we say we believe?

Why is it that what we believe in, who we believe in, is not more evident in our lives? Is the church's religion as meaningless, purposeless and as empty as the religion of the world?

Many in search of religion place convenience, pride, and humanity over truth. They look for a religion that promises everything in this life as a convenience, tolerant of man's views and perspective.

You can't live the truth if you're believing a lie, a religion that is contradicting God.

Hold fast to the Truth, the Promises of God, the Word of God.

CONTRADICTING GOD, Part 3

Acts 17:16-22 | 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 | July 26, 2020

We have an obsession for education, for our young people in particular: within the church, within the home, within the community, within the nation, within the world. To our society, the answer to all life's problems is found in worldly education, worldly wisdom.

If we were speaking of the wisdom God provides, that would be one thing. But when we hold the wisdom of man in higher esteem than the Wisdom of God, we are contradicting God.

Paul encountered a group of philosophers in Athens, Acts 17:16-22. These scholars esteemed themselves as wise and knowing. Yet when Paul spoke of Christ's resurrection, some of these supposedly-wise philosophers mocked Paul.

You can be a high school dropout and receive that Truth; you will be wiser than the man with the Ph.D. who doesn't believe.

The Ph.D., all the diplomas and accolades that you have, they're going to fade away, as surely as you're going to die. If you're holding onto some paper that says how bright you are, rather than the unchanging Hand of God through Jesus Christ, then you will perish with your paper.

There is Hope in Jesus Christ.

CONTRADICTING GOD, Part 2

Acts 17:16-32| July 19, 2020

"...May we know what this new teaching is which you are proclaiming?  For you are bringing some strange things to our ears..." Acts 17:19-20

We have a show called American Idol. There are many Christians who watch the show who have no problem with this. We actually give our whole-hearted, unqualified attention to something we categorize as American idol.

The very word that is used to promote this show is contrary to God.

Within the church, during the sports season, we want to rush through service because we want to catch our idols playing. Some will say, "Look Preacher, you're meddling a little too much. You're taking this way too far, and far too seriously."

When has God changed what he communicated about worship and idols?

So it's easy to talk about those crazy folks in Athens, how far they off they were in their religion, in their worship; and to dismiss our contrary nature, our commitment to the very things we are not to worship.

What is there to enjoy about contradicting God?

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me.

You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.

You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. - Exodus 20:2-6

CONTRADICTING GOD

Acts 17:16-31| July 12, 2020

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

- Acts 3:16-17

Idolatry.

This is the first contradiction.

When we speak of what Paul saw and how it stirred his spirit up, how it annoyed him, how it bothered him, then we see that Paul observed something that was disturbing with Athens.

He saw that there was a problem with that city; it was a problem was in that city.

Now, within the church; can we say there is a problem with the church, because there is a problem in the church?

We have created images and idols we bow down to. It represents everything but God.

We have idolatry deeply rooted with the church. We are all guilty.

Are you above being reproved? Are you above looking at how you worship and finding it is not aligned with God and His Word, but a contradiction to that? When was the last time you took inventory of your idolatry? Whether it's political, whether it's national, whether its pictures on the wall, whatever it is... This is something that separates people, when we SHOULD be bringing people together with the Good News of Jesus the Lord.

YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN, Part 3 | John 3:1-21

Today's lesson | John 3:9-21 | July 5, 2020

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

- John 3:18-21

You cannot be born again based on your own power, based on your own initiative, based on your own methods, based on your own means.

You must be born again as a result of what God does for you, for me, for us, for the world, through His Son, Jesus the Christ.

Until you look to that cross, until you respond with faith to Jesus Christ, might you receive the forgiveness of sin with God. You are either saved, born again; or you are condemned, judged unto damnation.

The judgement is coming. Turn from your darkness to His light.

You must be born again. Come to Jesus.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3:16

Sin leads to death, but the gift of God gives you eternal life.

We look at God's promise and provision, as it relates to humanity's problem, a sin problem, a death problem.

By God's goodness and grace, Abraham gained faith in God, and in God's promises. This was written not just for Abraham's sake, but for our sake as well. All who believe must have the same faith as Abraham, in God and the provision He gave us, Jesus Christ and His sacrifice. Today's verses: Romans 4:18-25; Romans 6:23
