Titus 2:10-11 | December 2, 2020
Not stealing, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect. - Titus 2:10 NASB
adorn /əˈdɔːn/ VERB: Make more beautiful or attractive.
Are we living in accordance with the instruction that we receive, and that is the doctrine of God our Savior? Are we adorning the doctrine of God our Savior in everything? That is in all respects, in every way, in every area of our lives?
Other verses:
For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. - Romans 15:4 NASB
All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; - 2 Timothy 3:16 NASB
And you were dead in your offenses and sins, in which you previously walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all previously lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), - Ephesians 2:1-5 NASB
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 NASB
Titus 2:1-6 | Wednesday November 4, 2020
Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. -Titus 2:3-5
Older women are to teach younger women. Without the grace of God and the power of the truth of His Word and His Spirit, this would be an impossible task, particularly in this time.
Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. -Titus 2:2 Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; -Titus 6
But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. -Titus 2:1
Obey this sound doctrine in the family and the result is sound living, a sound family. Be when man strays from God's instruction, there is darkness:

Titus 2:3-6 | Wednesday October 21, 2020
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. - Titus 2:3-6 KJV
Women have a high calling in the body of Christ. The role of the older woman and of the younger woman, in the church and in the home, is to honor Him not just in words, but in how she lives.
Women of God must conduct themselves in a way that is in line with God and His Word, in how they live, in how they teach.
Likewise, young men are called to live in a Godly way. The elders, bishops and pastors work more directly teaching young men, as some will be called to serve.
Women have been called by God to teach women. But within many churches, women use the worldly view of liberation to assume pastoral authority, when God hasn't called women to this role.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 NASB
Titus 2:2-5 | October 14, 2020
Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.
Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,
so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
Titus 2:2-5 NASB
Paul details the uncorrupt qualities older men must possess and teach to the younger men; and those older women must possess and teach to the younger women.
Older women should teach mothers to love their children. But 62% of the women in the U.S. who had abortions in 2014 were affiliated with a church.
So instead of loving their children as the Word demands, young women are killing them. In how many of those cases has an older woman not only failed to teach, but may have encouraged a young woman to get an abortion?
Older men must be uncorrupt in what they believe, in patience, in perseverance. How they live must be guided by the Word of God. Older men should live their lives as an example. But those who have not matured in their faith can have a negative impact the church.
Titus 2:1-8 | October 7, 2020
Beyond the Music | Worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth
But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.
Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.
Titus 2:1-8 NASB
What is life like for you when the music stops?
When the worship benediction is done?
When you drive out of the church parking lot?
As we continue in Titus, we look at this question: are we committed to God?
God does not desire lip service, he desires life service.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:21-24 NASB

Titus 2:1-8 NASB | Sound Doctrine
Paul gives Titus more specific instructions on sound doctrine.
But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.

Titus 1:16 | September 23, 2020
"They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate." Titus 1:16 KJV
- abominable [ uh-bom-uh-nuh-buhl ] adjective repugnantly hateful; detestabled
- disobedient [ dis-uh-bee-dee-uhnt ] adjective neglecting or refusing to obey; not submitting.
- reprobate [rep-ruh-beyt ] adjective morally depraved; unprincipled; bad;
Paul tells Titus these false teachers don't trust the Word of God, don't adhere to sound doctrine. Their works, how they live, and their disobedience is in contradiction to God.
Our works must demonstrate our faith in Christ, the power of God in us to live for Him.

Titus 1:11-15 | September 16, 2020
Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. - Titus 1:11-15
Whose mouths must be stopped...
Preachers, elders must remain on time, on target, on task. Bishops not committed to preaching the Word of God, will lead the entire flock astray.
...who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not...
False teaching compromises the Word. Elders, bishops and pastors can't be more concerned with preserving everyone's feelings of contentment and teach a lie.
...for filthy lucre's sake. And that's their motivation. Money. Power. Fame.
Elders, bishops and pastors must proclaim the Truth of God. They must be sound in faith, sound in doctrine, so the flock can also be healthy believers, sound in faith.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. - John 14:6

Titus 1:9-11 | September 9, 2020
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.
Titus 1:9-11 KJV
Deception of false teachers was an issue in Paul's time. He advises Titus that elders, bishops and priests must hold fast to the Word.
It's an issue in our time as well. There remains a loss of confidence in the Word of God by leaders in His household.
Elders, bishops, pastors and overseers must be qualified by God's standard. They cannot just use any tool they choose, any doctrine they craft. They've got to trust the Word of God, and adhere to right teaching, sound doctrine.

If a pastor, bishop or elder hasn't obeyed the qualifications Paul gave in Titus 1:6, they've already fallen short of holding fast to the faithful Word of God. They've created their own word, a compromised word.
They are disobedient.
Christians cannot accommodate gainsayers. This isn't rocket science. We are often more content, more comfortable with the lower standards of the secular world, than obeying the Word of God.
Paul tells us to rebuke the gainsayers, and teach them sound doctrine.
gainsayer (noun)
- One who contradicts or denies what is alleged; an opposer.

Titus 1:7-9 | August 26, 2020
"...holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict." - 1 Titus 9 NASB
As we look at the qualifications of a bishop, are we passionate about following the Word? Or are we passive followers, agreeing as long as it's within our comfort zone?
Does the Word of God teach hatred and bigotry? And is racism righteous, just, fair and equal according to God's standard?
According to God's standard, the only separation talked about is not racial; it is the separation from Him based on sin, on worldly ideals and obsessions.
Paul tells us that God's qualification for overseers is to exhort sound doctrine. In today's Sound Doctrine, we examine sound doctrine, U.S. Christianity, and the historical roots of racism in our country.
As pastors, we are not here to please the world.

Titus 1:7-9 | August 19, 2020
For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
Titus 1:7-9 NASB
This is not a man-made job description for a pastor position. This is what God requires of His bishops; of those appointed to oversee, to shepherd God's flock.
When man-made standards take the place of the standards of God in choosing a bishop, then obviously, the message will also be contrary to God's Word.
This is how people are persuaded to follow a drug-using, deranged, maniacal, sexually-immoral pastor to Guyana, and to commit suicide by drinking the sweet poison.
This is how you get people to leave their spouses, their children, their homes, to follow a religious lunatic on a suicide mission to catch a UFO on its way to heaven.
This is how you get racism, slavery, bigotry and segregation.
Man-made qualifications don't hold up. In God's Word, and only in God's Word, is Truth.

Titus 1:7-8 | August 12, 2020
For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; -Titus 1:7-8
Continuing from last week's lesson, Paul tells us what the overseer is NOT;
Not given to filthy lucre. Call it being seedy and greedy; bishops are not to use low ways, means and methods as a way of satisfying greed, achieving a sordid gain. This is the warning for appointing elders or bishops. Materialism dominates our culture; most unfortunately, this is the mindset of many overseers of our time, as we hear of elders, bishops and pastors living in mansions, flying in private jets.
Then Paul tells us what the overseer should be:
The pastor should be welcoming. Lover of good men. Self-control, temperance, sobriety of mind are all important. Dealing fairly, unprejudiced, treating all equally and equitably and justly are needed qualities.
But what is just? And good? And right? And fair? What is unprejudiced? How does this play out in the pastor's role, especially in today's world, in the context of racial equality?
As we wrestle with what we see now, is the mindset of many pastors, "I just want to preach the Gospel," fulfilling Paul's call for God's overseers to be just? For a pastor, being just means not just preaching the Gospel; we've got to believe it, and live it in our lives.
"In the twentieth century, America finally confronted equality; it is not indivisible. It must not be divided so that it is extended to some at the expense of others." -John Hope Franklin

Titus 1:7 | August 5, 2020
For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; -Titus 1:7
Paul tells us what the overseer is NOT; this is a job description we are not at liberty to modify.
Not self-willed. Not arrogant or self-pleasing, this frequently comes to the forefront. One extreme is to fight everything, to be combative from the pulpit and from the pews. The other extreme is for everyone to bow down, be hands-off; and allow the wrecking ball to wreck.
Not soon angry. This is anger that leads to sin, anger as when you don't get your way. Even when the pastor is right, as an overseer he must remain humble, meek and patient.
Not given to wine. Overseers cannot be dependent on the strong drink. There are many good, good, good brethren in faithful leadership, many who make great sacrifices. Then there are those that are considered great pastors, great teachers, but because of that, they seem to get a waiver on Paul's qualifications.
We'll continue with Titus 1:7 next Wednesday.

Titus 1:6-7 | July 29, 2020
If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; - Titus 1:6-7
God's Word is forever settled in heaven. But sometimes, it can disappoint our plans.
We don't get to dismiss what He requires of us, and to teach our version to someone else. God's Word, God's guidance, is consistent for every church that claims to follow the Lord Jesus Christ.
Be blameless, the husband of one wife. A woman cannot be the husband of one wife. It's sad that we even have to say, "You're not qualified." The reality here is, it's the husband of one wife: not a woman, must be a man. Not, "the wife of one woman," or, "the husband of one man." Not same sex. This is the husband of one wife. Period. That's God's Word.
God's Word hasn't changed. His qualification for a bishop, for an elder, for an overseer for a pastor, remain the same. They do not change. If you are going to oversee the house of God, you've got to be the example. Blameless.
Being a pastor is not just a place to plug somebody into, for them to go along with whatever your program is. The pastor owes his allegiance to God. Everything else is an off-shoot from that relationship. God is the one who calls the pastor and equips the pastor. He sets the qualifications for a pastor, and the standards for His house. We must recognize the authority of God's Word.

Titus 1:5-6 | July 22, 2020
For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. - Titus 1:5-6
When you consider the process for calling a pastor, what type of questions do you ask?
"Who do you know?"
"What type of credentials do you possess?"
Nowadays, it seems as if a potential pastor does not have a Ph.D, he's rarely called to preach.
We may have some Galilean fishermen who take issue with that. Apostles, preachers, teachers, elders answer to God and His Word, not the qualifications of man.
We seem to require every qualification that is impressive to man, but we seem to very-easily dismiss the qualifications that are established by God and His Word.

Paul reminds Titus of God's promises, God's truth and God's wisdom.
The Word we proclaim is an unchanging Word, because it represents an unchanging God.
As pastors and teachers, we have no right nor authority to change or manipulate the Word; any manipulation is corruption.
The preaching, the proclamation of His Word, must be based on what God Himself has promised and communicated to us.

2 Timothy 4:3-5 | July 8, 2020
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. - 2 Timothy 4:3-5
Sound Doctrine is not sound doctrine if it's your own crafting, of your own philosophy, that you're communicating to the people of God in His Name.
We have to be mindful of the tools that we use, and the end we have in mind. If you want a worldly, immature, shallow church, put your teaching in line with that. If you want a strong people of God, committed to the Word of God, and therefore committed to God, you've got to use the Word of God. There's no replacement.
